T
here is a great deal of cynicism about the advertising industry which is sometimes justified. This video, hosted by Rory Sutherland, has the three E’s of good content in one piece. Those E’s being entertain, enlighten and inform. This quickly paced talk with some choice self deprecating humor directed at the ad industry is mixed in with funny examples of quality advertising.
The first 16 minutes is worth watching more than once. Pay particular attention to the Shreddies Diamond Campaign. The discussion about the positive outcomes which can arise from increasing the perceived value of existing products is the part that might need a second viewing. For further reading on the philosophy of quality and value take a look at Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values
The examples used by Sutherland help the viewer to visualize the material and understand the practical application of the ideas. The moral, ideas are worth more than railroad tracks, and they cost a lot less.
It’s mainly a good laugh so watch the video and enjoy.
